Job Summary 

The Law Clerk supports DOJ OPA operations by processing incoming clemency petitions and correspondence, requesting and extracting Bureau of Prisons (BOP) reports, updating the IQ electronic case management system, and maintaining accurate electronic and paper case files. The work enables DOJ attorneys to evaluate petitions and prepare clemency recommendations for Presidential decision-making. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Screen, review, analyze, and sort incoming mail and correspondence (electronic and hardcopy). Electronically request BOP reports and extract required information to populate fields in IQ. Scan, prep, unitize, and file commutation and pardon petitions. 
  • Process scanned petitions for upload to IQ and to the shared network drive. 
  • Perform issue coding and structured data entry in IQ. 
  • Conduct routine electronic file maintenance and manage backup copies of original petitions. Compile and organize relevant documents for attorney review and evaluation. 
  • Coordinate effectively with DOJ attorneys, staff, and external agencies as required by workflow. Follow DOJ/contract security and information-handling requirements when working with sensitive information.

Required Qualifications 

  • J.D. or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school with at least one year completed. At least 1 year of litigation experience. 
  • Working knowledge of federal and state court systems and legal research procedures/resources. Proficiency with Westlaw and LexisNexis. 
  • Familiarity with document/file management systems, databases, spreadsheets, and imaging/scanning workflows. 
  • Familiarity with ESI tools and understanding of eDiscovery procedures/resources. 
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform accurate data entry and issue coding. Ability to handle high-volume mail/casework with consistent quality and timeliness. 
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills; able to work with multiple agencies and attorneys. U.S. Citizen; able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust suitability determination. 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Prior experience in government and/or litigation support environments. 
  • Trial experience. 
  • Current or active clearance/suitability (Public Trust or higher). 
  • Experience with case management platforms (including IQ or comparable systems). 
  • Experience with DOJ information handling, privacy, or security compliance (PII/CUI-style controls).
